For fans - If you are a fan of Dune, not only the movie but the story behind the story, if you like the religio-philosophical depth behind the actors, than you will love Dune: Messiah. There is not very much action and event in this second Dune novel, but the Dune-universe gets a lot of more depth, the psycho-phisiological methods of the different high-trained groups (Bene Gesserit, Guild, Mentats, Tleilaxu) is explained and before all showed in more detail.Plus, the pathethic heigth and fall of a God-Emperor who has lost his beliefe in the universe is a rare exception in the SF landscape. For me, Dune was since ever much more a Fantasy than a classical SF-story...

Very good, not good enough, though... - The book is brilliant, everybody who liked the first volume will love this second tome who tells the story of Paul Atreides after becoming the Muad Dib.The only thing I disliked in this book: it s too short!!Fortunately, there are more tomes to follow!

Necessary filler between Dune and Children of Dune - After (re)reading Dune I was a little dissatisfied with its end - until I found out, that there are the sequels. As to Dune Messiah: It seems to me, that Frank Herbert needed a bridge between Dune and CoD and wrote DM. It drags along. It has its high points, too and it IS a must read before one goes on with Children .. or you won t be able to understand what ist happening there. Read DM an the go on with CoD...

well i think Herbert trpped over his own feet - Hmmm.Herbert tried to make the sequel to Dune as great as his first book. But he failed poorly. The Hero of Dune, Paul Attreides, now is emperor himself, and all the book does is merely giving a biography. There isn t much excitement in it, but in the end. Actually it took my three attempts to finish this one. The only problem is, that this book is important to understanding it s sequels. So take it with dignity and work yourself through the world of science-fiction policy.Good Luck!

how art the mighty fallen - A sad book in some ways, tracing as it does the fall from power of the once-idealistic Muad Dib. Cleverly researched and written.
